Mining Company Best Practice Valuation Analysis

AWR Lloyd conducted an evaluation of a multi-billion dollar Asian energy conglomerate’s share price based on DCF and market multiples analysis. The study revealed both a significant discount to fair value and to peer multiples. We conducted a parallel ‘Market Signals Analysis’ involving fund manager interviews to help assess the reasons for the discounts. We advised on potential takeover defense strategies and recommended group restructuring measures, a share buy-back, an ESOP scheme and improvements to the company’s investor relations disclosure and communication programme. We also recommended a spin-off of the company’s power business via a separate listing. The client has implemented some of our recommendations and is considering implementing others.

Energy Storage and Fuel Cell Business Plan and Capital Raising

AWR Lloyd advised a Southeast Asian energy technology company over a number of years on the formulation of a global strategy to develop and commercialize its fuel cell and energy storage technologies. AWR Lloyd considered alternative applications including storage for wind and solar power, grid-based electricity trading and mobile electricity storage. We analyzed the economics of competing technologies and developed a long term business plan and strategy. We also provided a development-stage probability-based discounted cash flow and multiples based valuation of the company and its technologies as a support for raising funds and capital from government and private equity fund sources.

New Market Entry Strategy and Investment Planning

AWR Lloyd worked for a Fortune 500 oil and gas group in Southeast Asia to formulate a global power sector investment masterplan. We conducted research on the power market and regulation in all key countries in Asia-Pacific, North America and Europe and developed a detailed power plant database for selected countries. We advised on market entry strategies and provided benchmarking and case study analysis of other oil and gas groups with power sector strategies.

Biomass Customer Analysis

AWR Lloyd advised a biomass energy company on potential Korean and Taiwanese customers for the client’s proprietary biomass technology, both domestically and internationally.

Vanadium Redox Battery and Fuel Cell Business Plan and Equity Raising

AWR Lloyd worked closely with a Southeast Asian research company on the development of its vanadium redox battery and fuel cell technologies for many years helping them develop a global commercialization strategy, a five-year business plan and a Development Phase Probability Based DCF valuation analysis. We also developed the client’s financial strategy for raising grant money from a government and capital from private equity funds.

Oil Refinery and Underground Storage Pre-Feasibility Study

AWR Lloyd conducted a comprehensive pre-feasibility study for a Korean consortium in relation to a 300,000 bpd refinery and underground storage project in central Vietnam.

The refinery was intended to supply the Vietnamese domestic market with some exports to China. The work included refinery and crude oil market analysis, indicative refinery configuration (complex), project site selection, investment and operation plans, potential partners and investors, financial analysis and valuation – and a regulatory review.

Following completion of the study, AWR Lloyd worked with the client to present the project and pre-feasibility study to relevant ministries and potential strategic partners.

Government’s Earth Observation Satellite Strategy and Business Planning

AWR Lloyd advised a Southeast Asian government ministry in relation to the development of its long-term earth observation satellite strategy. The assignment included strategic consulting, international benchmarking, feasibility and business planning modules. Key focus areas were satellite technology (both optical and radar), midstream and downstream capability development – and applications around natural resources, infrastructure development and national security.

Gas Pricing Forecast and Strategy

AWR Lloyd advised a government agency, the Energy Regulatory Commission, in conjunction with partner-firm, in relation to a review of Thailand’s gas pricing strategy.

Oil Trading and Oil Storage Feasibility Studies

AWR Lloyd provided a study of long term petroleum demand in Cambodia, the Mekong River Delta and Ho Chi Minh City for a joint venture considering the development of an oil storage and trading business at Can Tho in the south of Vietnam.

AWR Lloyd analyzed the structure of petroleum demand in these areas for different products (diesel, gasoline, fuel oil…) and forecast demand scenarios over the next twenty years.

Based on extensive site due diligence and interviews with traders and distributors in the area we also profiled the various competitors and analyzed the competitive economics of alternative sources of supply to these zones of demand, factoring in logistics costs and delivery times

Waste to Power Market and Regulations

AWR Lloyd was commissioned by a Korean company to undertake an industry study for a potential ‘waste to energy’ greenfield investment in the Southwest of Thailand. The scope of work included providing an overview of the Thailand power market, assessing renewable power project development in Thailand and assessing feedstock availability. Subsequently, upon request by the client, we also conducted a detailed review of feedstock supply, heat value analysis and local governmental regulation. As a result, the client gained an in-depth understanding of the power market and was able to make an informed decision.

Power Master Plan Market Studies

AWR Lloyd was instrumental in the development of a power master plan for Petronas, the Malaysian oil and gas major. The scope of work included advice on the execution of entry strategies, research on power market and regulatory structure, providing power plant databases of selected countries and benchmarking other petroleum companies that had been exposed to power assets.

Petronas has adopted the master plan developed by AWR Lloyd and is currently pursuing the entry strategy recommended by AWR Lloyd.
